FRENECTOMY
A frenum also known as a frenulum is a small fold of tissue that connects areas such as the tongue, lips or cheeks to surrounding tissues. In some cases a frenum may be too tight, thick or short which can affect normal movement and contribute to concerns such as gum irritation, spacing between teeth or restricted tongue movement.
A frenectomy is a minor dental procedure that removes or releases a restricted frenum to improve comfort and function. The treatment is usually quick and performed with care to minimize discomfort and support proper healing.
Diastema refers to a noticeable gap between two teeth commonly seen between the front teeth. In some cases a thick or tight frenum attachment can contribute to this spacing. A frenectomy may be recommended along with orthodontic treatment to help improve tooth alignment and create a healthier smile.
Tongue-tie occurs when a tight frenum limits normal tongue movement. This restriction may affect oral function, speech or create tension on the gum tissues. A frenectomy can help release the restricted tissue and improve tongue mobility when recommended by a dental professional.
